Considering, annually, basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes, this review deals with subjects of special and topical importance, adding new ones as they arise. This 41st volume follows closely the objectives and style of the earlier volumes, continuing to regard the marine sciences as a unity.
